The bomber struck shortly after noon in front of a mosque in the Kocha Risaldar area of ​​Peshawar, the capital of Pakhtunkhwa province. Mohammad Asim, a spokesman for the local Lady Reading Hospital, confirmed the death toll.

Peshawar police chief Muhammad Ijaz Khan said two armed men on motorcycles approached the mosque and were stopped by police in search. They then opened fire on the police and entered the mosque. However, later video footage showed only one man in a black salwar-kameez entering the mosque. Authorities did not say who was behind the attack. No one has claimed responsibility for the attack.


Two policemen were stationed there as part of security for the Friday prayers. One of them was killed and another was seriously injured in the attack. However, a police official said that he also died later. There are several markets in the area. Locals say the area is very crowded on Fridays.


Witnesses said bodies were scattered inside the Kusa Risaldar mosque after the attack. There was dust everywhere. The bomb disposal unit said five kilograms of explosives were used in the attack.


Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan has condemned the attack. The country has recently seen an increase in violence. The attack on a military post on the Afghan border also killed several soldiers.
