The Australian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade has confirmed that a local embassy staffer was arrested by Thai police last month.
A spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Commerce said in a statement that the department was giving priority to the welfare and privacy of all its employees and that "we will continue to provide appropriate assistance."
However, the spokesperson declined to comment further on the ongoing legal issues.
Khmerin Hasiri, commander of the Royal Thai Police's foreign affairs department, said the Australian embassy had lodged a complaint against the man on January 8. Thai police say an investigation is under way.
According to a report by ABC Australia, the matter came to light after the camera's SD card was found on the bathroom floor last year. However, it is not clear how long the cameras have been in the bathroom, the report said.
Hugh White, an emeritus professor of strategic studies at the Australian National University, an Australian defense and foreign policy expert, told AFP that the incident was a sign of serious security breaches.
He said security was weak enough to install camera-like devices in a protected area. This indicates that the security arrangements at the embassy are not strong enough to keep them safe.
The Sydney Morning Herald reports that if the allegations are substantiated, the former IT worker at the embassy, Thamesansana, a dual citizen of Australia and Thailand, will face punishment.
