The Western European country has recently taken a tough stance against extremism. Islamic installations in France are being searched regularly after multiple terrorist attacks.

Two weeks ago, the country's interior minister, Gerald Darmanin, said he was in the process of closing the Great Mosque in the city of Bouve, 100 kilometers north of Paris. Because the imam in his speech spread hatred against Christians, homosexuals and Jews. However, the authorities did not take any serious action at once. The mosque was given 10 days to respond.

However, mosque authorities say Iman, who made the statement, has recently converted to Islam. A lawyer for the mosque's management association said the imam had given the speech of his own free will. In the meantime, he has been relieved of his duties. But the interior ministry said the imam was working as a regular imam at the mosque. He spoke in support of the US Alliance, but said that maintaining some independence was not the answer.

Last year, the home minister announced a crackdown on mosques with extremist affiliations. At the time, he said, those mosques could be closed if separatism was encouraged. There are 2,620 mosques in France. The Interior Ministry said authorities had investigated more than 100 mosques.
